Shannen Doherty has officially filed for divorce from her husband, Kurt Iswarienko, after 11 years of marriage, according to documents obtained by TMZ on Friday.
The 52-year-old Beverly Hills, 90210 actress, who recently celebrated her birthday earlier last week on April 12, told the newspapers that she and the photographer had been separated since January of this year.
The former couple first said “I do” in 2011 and haven’t welcomed any children during their relationship. Her marriage to Kurt was her third, having tied the knot with Ashley Hamilton and then Rick Salomon.
The Hollywood star’s rep, Leslie Sloane, told the outlet that “divorce is the last thing Shannen wanted.” Unfortunately, she felt she had no other choice.
Doherty, who recently reunited with her Charmed co-stars last month in March, has been battling breast cancer since returning in 2020 at stage four.
Sloane then told TMZ that the outlet might contact Kurt’s agent, “Collier Grimm at PICTUREKID,” because she was “intimately involved,” hinting that she may have been involved in the split.
Separate sources close to Shannen and Kurt told the outlet that the actress was “not doing well” with her health and added that their divorce was far from amicable, but rather bitter. and “very acrimonious”.
Also in documents obtained by TMZ, Doherty asked for spousal support but asked that it not be awarded to the photographer.
Prior to her marriage to Kurt, the star was married to Ashley Hamilton in 1993 until their divorce was finalized the following year in 1994. She later said “yes” to Rick Salomon in 2002, but their marriage was annulled nine months later in 2003.
In February 2020, it was revealed that the actress had been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer after going into remission from the disease in 2017.
During a previous interview with People in 2019, the Little House On The Prairie star opened up about how her battle with cancer actually made their relationship stronger.
“Cancer solidified us,” Shannen told the publication at the time. ‘Kurt and I like each other a lot more now.’
In 2015, the actress was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy, along with chemotherapy and radiation, which led her into remission in 2017. But in 2020, the cancer returned.
She further explained, “It’s not that our marriage wasn’t good before. But we were definitely going through some growing pains,” and added, “We would lock things down, and instead of solving it, we wouldn’t talk for a few days.
The actress went on to say that at the time, “we don’t let a night go by mad at each other” and revealed, “The last time we had a big argument was before cancer.”
Shannen said cancer doesn’t just affect the “person with cancer” but also “the people in your life.” And it shaped us both. We look at life very differently now.
The star commented on her now estranged husband’s support at the time, saying, “I don’t need to be a sexy little vixen.” The way Kurt sees me really helps me be a better person. He always said, ‘I’ve never seen anyone handle something so difficult with so much grace. You are so strong.’
The BH90210 actress said, ‘Kurt and I look at each other with deep respect now. He was my rock in every way possible, and he made sure I knew how much he loved and appreciated me.
“We have a much deeper appreciation (for each other) now and a much greater capacity for forgiveness.”
Later in 2021, while promoting her film, List Of A Lifetime, Shannen explained to People that her battle with cancellation was “part of life at this point” and referenced her now estranged husband.
“My husband says you would never know I have cancer. I never really complain. I don’t really talk about it. It’s part of life at this point.
The former couple officially tied the knot in a romantic sunset ceremony in Malibu in October 2011.
Shortly before news of her divorce broke, Doherty celebrated her 52nd birthday earlier last week, on April 12.
Her close friend and fellow actress, Sarah Michelle Gellar, paid a special tribute to the star on her main Instagram page, as well as uploading an assortment of snaps of the two together.
‘It’s your birthday @theshando so in your honor here’s a slideshow of some of the more ridiculous stunts (swipe right) Any suggestions for new ones?’ the Cruel Intentions star wrote in the caption.
Shannen kindly responded in the comments section and humorously wrote, ‘We’re drinking a lot in these pics!! Love you!!’
