Shannen Doherty files for divorce from her husband of 11 years, Kurt Iswarienko

Shannen Doherty and Kurt Iswarienko split up.

Friday, the Charm alum, 52, filed for divorce from Iswarienko after 11 years of marriage.

“Divorce is the last thing Shannen wanted,” Doherty’s rep Leslie Sloane told PEOPLE in a statement. “Unfortunately, she felt she had no other choice.”

Sloane also alleges that Iswarienko’s agent was “intimately involved” in their divorce.

Iswarienko and his agent did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for comment.

According to the divorce filing obtained by TMZ (the first to report the news), the couple separated in January. Doherty is asking for spousal support and asking that it not be awarded to her photographer ex-husband. The couple do not share children.

Hours before news of the case broke, Doherty shared a cryptic message on Instagram. “The only people who deserve to be in your life are those who treat you with love, kindness and total respect,” read the post, which was also shared on her Instagram Story.

Doherty and Iswarienko married in October 2011. The actress was previously married to Ashley Hamilton from 1993 to 1994 and Rick Salomon from 2002 to 2003.

A year before her nuptials to Iswarienko, Doherty told PEOPLE she was taking her third marriage seriously. “For me, marriage is such a gigantic commitment that it’s not something I would take lightly anymore,” she said at the time. “I learned my lesson.”

The divorce announcement comes a month after Doherty told fans she “felt great” during a Charm panel alongside Rose McGowan, Holly Marie Combs, Brian Krause, Dorian Gregory and Drew Fuller, hosted by PEOPLE’s Breanne L. Heldman, at 90s Con in Hartford, Connecticut.

The actress has spent the past few years managing ongoing treatments for stage 4 breast cancer.

She was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. She went into remission two years later, but revealed in 2020 that her cancer had returned to stage 4.

Doherty made a point of sharing all the good, bad and ugly of her cancer treatments since she announced in 2020 that the disease had returned the year before.

Doherty said she felt “responsible” to shatter misconceptions about cancer.

“I feel like I have a responsibility in my more public life, which I separate from my acting life… to talk about cancer and maybe educate people more and let people know that people with stage 4 are very lively and very active,” she told reporters during a virtual panel for her Lifetime film.
